Salamander
The salamander is an important symbol in the novel due to its affiliation with fire. In medieval times, salamanders were often thought to have been born from fire and able to withstand it. As a result, the firemen chose it as their symbol to represent their protection from fire as well as their ability to harness it. Their fire truck is also known as the Salamander, due to its colour and properties.
Phoenix
The phoenix is yet another symbol related to fire. It is found on Captain Beatty's helmet and it is also mentioned by Granger when they witness the destruction of the city. In mythology, the phoenix was known to clean itself with fire and when the city is burned down it symbolizes the cleansing of society. Guy's story is, in a way, the story of the phoenix as he is reborn from the ashes of his former beliefs.
